"Smart" bandage tracks wound healing with sensors 2018-07-11 14:42:00 / TECHNOLOGİCAL İNNOVATİONS

Researchers from Tufts University (USA) have created a new "smart" bandage with built-in sensors that track the process of healing wounds.

According to the developers, the bandage-plaster has undergone laboratory tests and can cope even with complex wounds. Built-in sensors monitor the pH level and body temperature, which can indicate the presence of infection or inflammation.

Burns and various diseases can suppress the regenerative capacity of the skin, but the "smart" patch can effectively heal even poorly healing wounds, minimizing interference from the patient or doctors. The technology promotes natural healing of the skin. The microprocessor reads the data of the sensors and even injects doses of antibiotics at the request of the carrier. The entire structure is attached to a transparent medical film and forms an elastic bandage less than 3 mm thick.

The creators of the plaster sought to ensure that the dressing material turned out to be cheap, and all components except the microprocessor were disposable. In the future, it is possible to expand the capabilities of the "smart" bandage to increase the number of areas of its application. Currently, the development has been successfully tested in vitro and is undergoing preclinical trials.
