The production of Russian information discs made of quartz glass for commercial use will begin by 2021, TASS reported. Such a disk can save data for 100 thousand years, withstand fire, water and cosmic radiation. The launch of pilot projects is planned already by 2019.

According to Ivan Glebov, head of the Laboratory of Laser Nanostructuring of Glass, the development of the principle of recording and reading information, as well as the choice of recorded material, began in 2015 as one of the projects of the Foundation for Advanced Studies. The project is designed for three years, in 2018, experimental design work will begin to build a prototype.

As Glebov noted, the main users of the "eternal disk" will be archives, museums, libraries, state structures, the army, banks, enterprises of state corporations, which need to store information of special importance. According to the head of the laboratory, also the "eternal disk" will be widely claimed by IT companies.
